Why is Your Double Glazing Misting Up Or Building Condensation In-between

Save 20% when you replace 3+ Glass Units!

If you’ve noticed condensation inside your double glazing, a cloudy appearance, or your windows have become foggy between the panes, your sealed unit has most likely failed. This is commonly referred to as blown double glazing, misted double glazing, or a failed sealed unit. Because the moisture is trapped inside the insulated glass, no amount of cleaning will remove it from the inside of the window.

The good news is that in most cases, your window frame doesn’t need replacing. We simply replace the failed double glazed glass unit with a brand new, made-to-measure sealed unit, restoring crystal clear views, improving thermal efficiency and giving your windows a new lease of life. Every replacement glass unit is backed by our 10-year anti-fog guarantee, so you can enjoy complete peace of mind for years to come.

FAQs

Misted Windows? Here’s What You Need to Know

Get clear answers about blown double glazing, condensation between the panes, replacement costs, lead times and our 10-year anti-fog guarantee.

If the mist or condensation is between the two panes of glass and you can’t wipe it away from either side, the sealed double glazed unit has most likely failed. Moisture has entered the cavity between the panes, creating the cloudy or foggy appearance commonly known as misted or blown double glazing.

Window Fixers solution: We can replace the failed glass unit while keeping your existing window frame.

Try wiping the glass from both inside and outside. If the condensation, mist, white haze or water droplets remain trapped between the panes, this is a strong sign of a failed sealed unit.

Send us a photo and we can usually identify the problem before arranging a visit.

“Blown double glazing” is a common term for a failed double glazed sealed unit. The edge seal that keeps the cavity between the panes sealed has deteriorated, allowing moisture laden air into the unit.

The result can be misting, fogging, cloudiness, internal droplets or staining between the panes.

The dependable long term solution is normally to replace the failed sealed glass unit. You usually don’t need to replace the complete window.

Some services advertise drilling or “defogging” the existing unit, but this doesn’t recreate the original factory sealed insulated glass unit.

Usually, no.

If your uPVC, aluminium frame is still in good condition, we can normally remove the failed double glazed unit and install new made-to-measure glass into your existing frame.

Energy Saving Trust specifically notes that when condensation develops between the panes, it may be possible to replace the double glazing rather than the entire window unit.

Replace the glass, not your windows.

At Window Fixers, standard misted double glazed glass replacement starts from £220 per unit, including fitting, subject to size, specification and access.

The final price depends on factors including:

  • glass dimensions and thickness
  • toughened or laminated safety glass
  • Low-E/energy-efficient glass
  • obscure or privacy glass
  • Georgian or leaded designs
  • patio, bifold or large glass units
  • access and installation requirements

Send us a photo for a quotation before we visit.

Double glazed sealed units don’t last forever. Failure can occur as the perimeter seal deteriorates through ageing, repeated temperature changes, installation conditions, frame movement or drainage related problems.

Once that seal is compromised, moisture can enter the cavity and the glass gradually becomes misted or cloudy.

Yes. Our replacement sealed glass units come with a 10 year anti-fog guarantee, giving you long-term protection against premature sealed-unit failure, subject to our guarantee terms.

No. This distinction is important.

If condensation can be wiped from the room-facing surface, it is usually related to indoor humidity, ventilation and the temperature of the glass not necessarily a failed sealed unit.

If the condensation is trapped between the panes and can’t be wiped away, the sealed unit has probably failed

External condensation isn’t normally a sign that your double glazing has failed.

In fact, Energy Saving Trust says condensation on the outside can be a sign that the windows are performing efficiently because less heat is escaping through the glass to warm the external pane.

Outside = usually normal.
Between the panes = likely failed unit.

A failed seal can reduce the effectiveness of the insulated glass unit. Energy Saving Trust states that double glazing letting air in between the panes reduces the window’s effectiveness.

Replacing the failed unit gives you the opportunity to restore the glazing and use modern energy-efficient glass without replacing a serviceable frame.

Normally, the complete sealed glass unit is replaced, rather than separating and replacing one of its panes on site.

Double glazing is manufactured as an insulated unit comprising multiple panes, a spacer system and perimeter seals. Your existing frame can usually remain in place.

Once your made-to-measure glass is manufactured, the actual replacement of a straightforward sealed unit can often be completed relatively quickly.

The old unit is removed, the glazing system and relevant frame condition are checked, and the new sealed unit is installed into your existing frame.

“Many standard units can be fitted in around 30–60 minutes, depending on the window, size and access.”

Most standard replacement sealed units are ready within approximately 3–5 working days, while specialist, decorative, oversized or toughened units may take longer. We’ll confirm the expected lead time when we quote.

Yes. Failed sealed units aren’t limited to ordinary windows.

Window Fixers can replace misted or blown glass in:

standard uPVC windows, French doors, uPVC doors, sliding patio doors, bifold doors, conservatories, office glazing and many other double glazed applications.

Safety glass specifications will be used where required.

The easiest way is to WhatsApp us a photo of the misted window or door.

If possible, include a photograph showing the entire window and the approximate glass dimensions. We’ll identify the likely glass specification and provide an initial quotation. Where further measurements or inspection are required, we’ll let you know.

No call-out charge. No fix, no fee. Fixed pricing confirmed before work begins.
