At a glance

What is a window lock mechanism repair?

A window lock repair means taking out the failed locking gear inside the opening sash of a uPVC casement window and fitting a correctly matched replacement. It fixes a handle that spins, sticks part way round or turns without securing the window, without replacing the window.

At Window Fixers it costs from £175 per window, including the new mechanism, fitting, resetting the keeps and VAT, and it is usually done the same day. Handles start from £108.

Common problems

Signs your window lock has failed.

If any of these sound familiar, the locking gear inside the sash is the likely cause. Send us a photo and we’ll confirm before you book.

Handle spins freely

The handle turns all the way round with no resistance, usually a broken gearbox or sheared drive.

Window won’t lock

The handle turns fully but the sash stays loose, because the cams never reach their keeps.

Handle jams halfway

The handle stops dead part way round, often at 45 degrees, and won’t go any further.

Window stuck shut

A cam or bolt has jammed in its keep, so the sash can’t be released from the handle.

Stiff, forceful handle

A dry or binding mechanism needs a shove to turn, and forcing it is what snaps the gearbox.

Draughts & rattles

Worn cams no longer pull the sash tight against the frame, so air gets in and it rattles in the wind.

We repair locks on outward-opening uPVC and aluminium casement windows, side-hung and top-hung. We don’t work on timber windows, sash windows, Velux or skylight windows, single or secondary glazing, water leaks or mastic replacement.

FAQ

Window lock questions, answered.

Can’t see yours? Send us a message and we’ll reply in minutes.

How much does it cost to replace a window lock mechanism?

Replacing the locking mechanism in a standard uPVC casement window costs from £175 per window, including the new mechanism, fitting and resetting the keeps. Handles start from £108 for the first handle on a visit. Three or more windows at one property get 20% off.

Why does my window handle spin round without locking?

That normally points to a broken gearbox or a sheared drive inside the mechanism. The handle still turns the spindle, but nothing is pushed along the sash, so no cam reaches its keep.

Do I need a new window if the lock has failed?

Usually not. The locking mechanism is a separate component. Where the sash and frame are sound, it can be replaced while the window itself stays exactly where it is.

Why is my window stuck shut?

A cam or bolt has jammed in its keep, or the gearbox has failed part way through its travel, so the handle can’t release the sash. It can normally be freed and the mechanism replaced without damaging the frame.

Why is my window handle so stiff to turn?

Stiffness usually comes from a mechanism running dry or starting to bind, or cams fighting keeps that have drifted out of line. Forcing a stiff handle tends to snap the gearbox, so it’s worth looking at early.

Can a faulty window lock cause draughts?

Yes. The cams pull the sash tight against the frame. If they are worn or no longer reach the keeps, compression drops and air gets through, often with a rattle in the wind.

What is the difference between an espagnolette and a shootbolt lock?

An espagnolette is the metal strip in the edge of the sash with cams that engage keeps on the frame. A shootbolt drives bolts out of the top and bottom of the sash, giving a firmer clamp on taller windows.

Can you match the lock on an older window?

Usually. Mechanisms are identified by backset, gearbox height, cam spacing and handle centres rather than brand, so an equivalent can normally be sourced even for windows that are decades old.

Do you repair locks on timber windows?

No. Our lock repair service covers uPVC and aluminium casement windows. We don’t repair timber windows, sash windows, Velux or skylight windows, single or secondary glazing, water leaks or mastic replacement. Send a photo if you’re not sure which you have.

How do I get a quote for a window lock repair?

Send photos or a short video on WhatsApp showing the whole window, the handle and the edge of the open sash with its lock strip. We’ll reply with a fixed price, usually within 15 minutes during opening hours.

How much does a window handle repair cost?

A new uPVC window handle costs from £108 for the first handle, fitted, with additional handles on the same visit from £54 each. If the handle turns but nothing locks, the mechanism behind it has usually failed, which we replace from £175 per window.

Can you repair double glazing locks and mechanisms?

Yes. Double glazing lock repair means replacing the espagnolette, shootbolt or gearbox inside the sash of your uPVC or aluminium double-glazed window. It is fitted and tested in one visit and covered by our 1-year guarantee.
